I'm sure many of us have been eagerly awaiting the release of spider-man 2. It's a game I've been looking forward to for months now, especially after the success of the first game and the Miles Morales spin-off. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to hear the news this week that the game could be finished in only 15 to 17 hours, and even platinumed in 30 hours.
This isn't the only issue. The game is now priced at $70 or £70, a significant increase from the original game which was priced at only $55 or £55. While there are likely to be some advances in graphics and other elements, it seems hard to justify this price increase when the game is likely to be smaller than the original.
I understand that games are becoming more and more expensive to make, but this does seem to be an example of publishers trying to take advantage of consumers. This isn't helped by the fact that spoilers for the game seem to be getting leaked early, which means I'm not sure if I should wait for the price to drop or not.
To me, the obvious answer is for games to be made shorter and cheaper, which is what Miles Morales did. This is something that Sony seems to be doing with the God of War 'half-sequel', as well as other companies like Ubisoft. But I feel like if games were priced more reasonably, this wouldn't be necessary.
At the end of the day, I'm not willing to pay the full price for Spider-Man 2, so I'm going to have to wait for it to get cheaper. This isn't an ideal situation, but it's the only way to make sure I'm not being taken advantage of. I hope that in the future, publishers will be more mindful of the pricing of their games and make them more affordable.
