Witnesses have reported a shocking incident that occurred on a bus in South London. It is said that a teenage boy had tried to give his ex-girlfriend flowers and a love note, but it did not go as he had hoped.
The girl and her friend had been returning a bag of items when the boy pulled out a large knife, estimated to be about one foot long. He then proceeded to chase them off the bus, and when the girl leapt to her friend's defense, he stabbed her in the neck and chest.
A bus passenger named Bridget, a mother of two, said, “Everybody was panicked. Two bus drivers and a lady were trying to help the girl. She had been stabbed in the neck and chest.”
Victor Asare, a security worker, added, “A lot of people came, everyone came off the bus. Everybody was crying and screaming. The girl was on the floor. We tried to catch him and a lot of people tried to save the girl. I was so shocked, I was shaken. It’s somebody’s daughter.”
The girl was later identified as Eliyanna, who was a student in her GCSE year at Old Palace of John Whitgift, a private school. Her friends and family have been paying tribute to her, describing her as very comedic and with a bright future ahead of her.
The suspect fled to New Addington, where he was later arrested on a tram. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said, “The senseless murder of a 15-year-old girl on her way to school is impossible to comprehend. It was moving and humbling to meet many members of the exceptional Croydon community who have come together in support of a family now dealing with the most unimaginable grief.”
Local youth worker Anthony King said he had met with Eliyanna's friends and family following the attack. He said it was the fourth or fifth time he had to look a parent in the eye and tell them their child had died. He added, “The noises and screams I heard this morning will sit in my spirit indefinitely. Keep the family in your prayers and thoughts.”
The 17-year-old boy has been held in custody overnight with an update from police expected today. This tragedy has left the community of Croydon in shock, and Eliyanna's family and friends will be in all of our thoughts.
