A tragic event has struck the small town of San Jose, California. On October 24th, a 15-year-old boy driving a stolen 2008 Nissan sedan was involved in a hit-and-run that took the life of a beloved and pregnant preschool teacher, April Zoglauer.
The 21-year-old April had been working at Play ‘N’ Learn Preschool for many years, having started as a teenage volunteer. Tammy Lariz, co-owner of the preschool, said of April, “Her job was just to love on them, and she was good at it. Honestly, I’ve been doing this for 27 years, and I’ve never had somebody else who could do that job. Not the way she could do it.” April had been 27 weeks pregnant when she was killed, and doctors at a nearby hospital were able to deliver her baby, Devontae Aaron Zoglauer, via an emergency C-section. Unfortunately, the premature newborn passed away later.
The news of April’s death has come as a shock to the tight-knit community. Angie Loza, director of Play’ N’ Learn, said, “April’s grown up here, so we’ve known her for a very, very long time.” April had been highly supported by her family and friends, so much so that she had two gender reveal parties to ensure all her loved ones could attend.
In memory of April Zoglauer, a memorial and GoFundMe have been set up in her honour. She will be remembered for her calming presence and her unconditional love for the children she cared for. Tammy Lariz said of April, “She meant everything to us. She was a blessing.” This terrible event has taken away a young and vibrant woman who had the world ahead of her.
