Families are forced to come together in times of hardship. For Jevonnte Allen and Whitney Williams, a San Diego couple, this hardship came when their 14-year-old daughter, Destinee Allen, contracted pneumonia during a school trip to Spain.
NBC San Diego reported that Destinee had been hospitalized in Barcelona, and the first few days were a nightmare for her parents, as they had no idea what was wrong. Jevonnte said, "We barely got to identify that it was pneumonia, for the first couple of days, we knew nothing."
However, what seemed to be a cold soon turned out to be a septic infection. Whitney told NBC San Diego, "With her having a heart condition, it caused her to have issues with her heart rate, and septic made her have low blood pressure, and they found out that she had an infection in her organs, and so they transferred her to the hospital where she is now and placed her in the ICU so that they can better care for her."
The pain of this situation is all too familiar for the family, as seven years ago they lost their son, who also had a heart condition. Jevonnte said to the outlet, "With my son, we went through so much for two to three years, in and out of the hospital, there for six months. You just have to have faith in God."
Despite the difficult situation, the family is staying positive and believing that Destinee will pull through. Jevonnte said, "She's a fighter, and I feel like she's going to make it happen. There's going to be a happy ending to this story."
NBC San Diego reported that Williams and Allen are now with Destinee in Spain, where she will remain for weeks until returning home to San Diego.
Destinee had been studying Spanish at the Language Academy in San Diego, before graduating eighth grade. According to CBS 8, it was shortly after this that Destinee set off on her school trip to Spain.
