Youths cause chaos at WA max security prison, 6 guards injured.
Six prison guards were injured during a ten-hour stand-off at Casuarina Prison in Perth, one of Western Australia's toughest jails. The incident was sparked by two detainees who attacked an officer with a makeshift weapon, stealing her keys and releasing others from cells.

The thirteen juveniles caused damage to three buildings, throwing debris and fire extinguishers and climbing onto roofs. One guard in his fifties was taken to the hospital with a broken foot.

The Specialist Operations Group was eventually called in, with the last inmate surrendering at 2.15am. The offenders were being held in the controversial unit 18 of the adult prison, which houses those too badly behaved for Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

WA Premier Mark McGowan has expressed his desire for those over 18 to be transferred to adult prisons unless there are exceptional circumstances. However, due to the security upgrade at Banksia Hill, it will be months before unit 18 is closed.

It has been reported that the ring leader has a history of attacking officers, and had stolen pepper spray from one only days earlier, as well as putting another female staff member in a headlock twice in the same day.

The Prison Officers' Union has called for increased staffing levels to avoid any further incidents, as Casuarina Prison is currently running at 100 officers short.
