Woman drives car to get ice cream, but car accidentally rolls into the sea.
A woman experienced a costly mistake when she stepped out of her car for an ice cream, leaving it to roll into the sea.
The unfortunate incident occurred at the Sandbanks ferry in Dorset on Thursday, when the woman parked her Ford Focus on a slipway and forgot to put the handbrake on.
The car then slowly floated around the famous multi-million pound houses at the shore, attracting the attention of many tourists.
Realizing the error, harbour officials and coastguards quickly brought in a crane barge and divers to tie straps around the car.
The woman was reportedly picked up by friends and left the scene, while the divers emerged carrying a laptop that had been in the car.
Five hours later, the car was finally lifted from the depths of Poole harbour upside down.

Allan Norman from HM Coastguard said: “We received a call to say that a Ford car had entered the water just down the slipway to the chain ferry entrance at 2.30pm. The driver was safe and well. I understand she had exited the vehicle and it then rolled into the water. Our primary concern was to make sure everyone is safe and we need to extract to vehicle to prevent pollution and make sure the chain ferry could run safely.”
Heidi Garsden, a witness, said: “The lady went inside to buy an ice cream and when she came back the car was gone. The car was bobbing around in the water for a bit before it sank. The coastguard and other services were called to the scene. It must have been heartbreaking for her to watch.”

A spokesperson for Dorset police also commented: “We received a report at 2.22pm of an incident involving a car in the water at Banks Road in Sandbanks, Poole. Officers have attended and are liaising with the coastguard and the harbourmaster. The incident has resulted in the suspension of the Sandbanks Ferry and congestion in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible. It has been confirmed the car is unoccupied and there are no reports of any injuries.”
Fortunately, after about an hour, the Sandbanks ferry services resumed. The woman, however, was left with a hefty lesson in the importance of setting the handbrake.
