Chelsea have been on the lookout for a new defensive midfielder for some time now. After missing out on top target Moises Caicedo, their attention has turned to Ajax star Edson Alvarez. The Mexico international has been on their radar for over a year, with the Blues having made a £43 million offer for him last summer.
Unfortunately, that offer was rejected, with Alvarez going on strike in an effort to force through a transfer. Reflecting on the saga, he said: “As a player you are aware that this would change everything. A better league, a better life for you and for your family. This is what it’s all about for me. I am here for my love for football but also for my family. I am very disappointed about it. But I am convinced that one day another big club will come for me. This winter, or in the summer.”
It now appears that Alvarez could get his move to the Premier League, albeit to a different London club. Fabrizio Romano has reported that the 25-year-old has agreed personal terms with West Ham. The Irons still need to agree a fee with Ajax, who he has made 147 appearances for, with negotiations to continue over the weekend.
This will be welcome news for David Moyes, whose side had been on the lookout for a replacement for Declan Rice, who left for Arsenal. West Ham had been looking to sign James Ward-Prowse from Southampton but pulled out of that deal having refused to meet their £40m valuation. They have also been looking at Manchester United duo Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire but the two clubs are someway apart in their valuations for the pair.
It looks like Chelsea have missed out on yet another one of their top targets. Hopefully, they will be able to find the midfielder they are looking for soon.
