Villagers Demand Retention of Aigur Government PU College

Aigur, Oct. 12: Ponnappa, Deputy Director of the Department of Pre-University Education, observed that the academic standards of the Aigur Government Pre-University (PU) College have plummeted because the institution has failed to win the confidence of the villagers.

He was speaking at a meeting held at the Aigur college regarding the Education Department's order to merge the Aigur Government PU College with the Kushalnagar Government PU College and relocate it to Kushalnagar. He noted that the college currently has one principal and five guest lecturers; regarding academic performance, only two out of four Second PU students passed last year, which is not a satisfactory result.

He stated that the Arts stream would be replaced by the Commerce stream in the upcoming academic year. He added that the college could be saved if villagers and the college administration stepped forward to enroll 40 students in the First PU course. He explained that since the government spends approximately ₹3.5 lakh per student—in addition to lecturers' salaries and maintenance costs—running the institution becomes difficult if student enrollment is low.

Madikeri Government PU... Vijay, the Principal of the PU College, stated that out of the 21 students who passed the 10th standard at Aigur, only four have enrolled in the Aigur PU College; he questioned why the remaining 17 students chose not to join this institution. He clarified that while the department has sought a proposal regarding the relocation of the college, no final decision has been made yet.
