In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, customs officers have made a significant advancement in the fight against drugs. Last month, they uncovered 156 toothpaste tubes filled with cocaine, ketamine, and MDMA.
Now, police have identified and shut down a Vietnam-based MDMA ring, which had been importing 106 kilograms of pure MDMA powder from Vietnamese people living in France since late 2021. The ring was led by a man known as Tri Whale, who allegedly produced and sold over 450,000 tablets across the region for tens of billions of Vietnamese dong.
On April 24, police raided the ring's lab in District 4 and conducted 16 home searches, resulting in the arrest of 21 people, including Tri Whale. During the raid, they also seized 18,000 ecstasy pills, 900 grams of ketamine, 120 sachets of "happy water," and 21 packets of a colorless crystalline substance.
The bust follows another significant drug-related event, which occurred on March 16. Four flight attendants arriving from Paris were arrested, as they had been paid 10 million dong to transport "some goods" to Vietnam. The goods turned out to be 112 toothpaste tubes filled with 8.4 kilograms of gray tablets and 42 toothpaste tubes containing 3 kilograms of white powder.
The police searched the attendants' homes and found no evidence of drugs, so they were released. Since then, six other cases have been discovered involving Vietnamese people living in France sending drugs to Vietnam via Hanoi's airport, hidden in toothpaste tubes and dietary supplement boxes.
Thanks to the hard work of authorities in Ho Chi Minh City, a major drug-related issue has been brought to light and steps are being taken to ensure a safer future for the people of Vietnam.
