Attending a Birmingham football game should be a fun and memorable experience for all who are present. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case for fans on September 14th. After the Jackson-Olin High School vs. Minor High School football game, Jefferson County high school football team fans witnessed an unfortunate event when their band director, Johnny Mims, was tased and arrested.
A YouTube clip from NBC News shows the incident that happened that day. Band directors of both schools were instructed by officers to end their performances. Jackson-Olin's band had stopped, but Minor's continued under Mims' order. After he didn't comply, officers decided to put him in custody for disorderly conduct. The situation escalated quickly with physical altercation between Mims, Birmingham City Schools System security, and the officers. The unidentified arresting officer claimed the band director pushed him after refusing to put his hands behind his back. Mims was then subdued by a taser.
Superintendent Walter Gonsoulin released a statement urging people not to jump to conclusions until the facts had been gathered. Mims was taken to UAB Hospital and then transported to the Birmingham City Jail, where he was later discharged on bond. His attorney, Juandalynn Givan, stated that the incident was unacceptable, and the officers' accusations against her client were lies. She further added that tasing an educator in front of students is excessive and traumatizing.
Mims himself said he doesn't use his arm regularly anymore, as he was tased in the shoulder and lower torso area. He is now looking to regain strength, but more importantly, he is concerned about his students. It is clear that the situation was handled poorly and in a manner that was inappropriate and excessive. Hopefully, this situation will be handled appropriately and justice will be served.
