On September 14th, Universal Music Group (UMG) launched an HBCU scholarship program as part of their initiative called Task Force for Meaningful Change (TFMC). The program will collaborate with Howard University College of Medicine in Washington D.C, Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Meharry Medical College in Nashville, and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in California.

The TFMC Public Health Advisory Board, lead by prominent national public health experts Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr. and Dr. Camara Jones, is dedicated to tackling the “Super Priority” issue that affects Black and underprivileged communities. As the Executive Director of TFMC, Dr. Menna Demessie explained, “Our efforts to direct our philanthropic efforts in a way that combats racial disparities in public health is directly informed by the insights of experts like Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Jones. Our TFMC members really understand our mission, and they understand the power of music – as well as our collective ability – to leverage our position as industry leaders to make positive social change.”

The scholarships will help 50+ students in each school pay for their education. Morehouse College will provide funds to students who need financial assistance to help serve marginalized urban and rural communities. Meanwhile, the Meharry School of Medicine will reward students who excel academically, demonstrate leadership service, and are devoted to servicing underserved and fulfilled populations.

This scholarship program comes on the heels of the $1 million grant recently awarded to 4 HBCUs, after their campuses were shut down due to racist bomb threats. UMG’s scholarship program serves to further combat racism and make a lasting positive change for Black and underprivileged communities.
