The Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) scheme in London has been met with strong opposition from a small group of people known as 'Blade Runners'. They have been targeting the mobile camera vans that detect drivers who are not compliant with the scheme by deflating the tyres, covering the cameras in bags, and even graffiting the vans with the words 'no ULEZ' on the side.

A spokesperson from Transport for London (TfL) has announced that they will start issuing fines of £180, reduced to £90 if paid within 14 days, to rule breakers, after previously only issuing warnings. The ULEZ scheme uses automatic number plate recognition technology to identify vehicles and drivers have to pay a daily charge of £12.50 if their vehicle is not compliant with the new standards.

In addition to this, around 4,000 people have joined a Facebook group encouraging people to report sightings of the vans and the Metropolitan Police has reported 510 crimes related to ULEZ cameras between April and August. Two arrests have been made, with one person charged and bailed and the other case discontinued.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has warned people attacking cameras that 'protest should be lawful, safe and peaceful', adding: 'It is really important to stay on the right side of the law.' A TfL spokesperson said: 'Vandalism is unacceptable and all incidents on our network are reported to the police for investigation. Criminal damage to ULEZ cameras or vehicles puts the perpetrators at risk of prosecution and injury, while simultaneously risking the safety of the public. Camera vandalism will not stop the ULEZ operating London-wide. All vandalised cameras are repaired or replaced as soon as possible.'
