We've got some great news for those dreaming of a white Christmas: it's officially a white Christmas in the UK! Unfortunately, most of us won't be getting one. According to the Met Office, for an official white Christmas to be declared, all that has to happen is a single snowflake falling somewhere in the country at some point on December 25.
Scotland is the lucky one this year, with some parts of the country above 300 metres expected to get up to 10 centimetres of snow. But for the rest of the UK, it's a different picture entirely. Forecasters believe that today could be one of the hottest Christmas Days on record, with temperatures as high as 14C. This could be the hottest Christmas Day since 2016, when temperatures hit 15.1C.
Yesterday was the warmest Christmas Eve recorded by the Met Office in more than 25 years, with temperatures reaching 15.3C. Liam Eslick, a forecaster with the weather agency, said: “It’s been an exceptionally mild couple of days across all of the UK; temperatures have been well above average for the time of year, the maximum for December being 7C.”
Rather than snow, much of the country will get drizzle, while Wales is expected to be hit by some heavy rains. A yellow weather warning for wind covering much of Scotland expired at midnight, though blustery conditions are likely to continue. So, while we won't get the white Christmas most of us are hoping for, it looks like we'll still get to enjoy some mild and sunny weather in the UK.
