UK's top foodie spot isn't London, it's somewhere else.
When it comes to food, the UK doesn't always have the best reputation. We're often criticized for our bland vegetables and lack of seasoning, with fish and chips being our most famous (and perhaps only) delicacy. But despite what the rest of the world might think, we know that Britain has a vibrant foodie scene. From diverse markets to innovative new restaurants and top-notch fine dining, there's something for everyone.

In fact, the UK has an impressive number of Michelin-star restaurants - nine with three stars, 27 with two stars, and 170 with one star. And now, a UK city has made it onto Time Out's list of the best cities for food in the world. Sorry Londoners, it's not the capital this time, but rather Liverpool that has claimed the 11th spot. It's the only UK city to make the list.

According to Liverpool-based writer Alice Porter, the city is "perhaps better known for its nightlife than its food." But with a recent surge in new foodie ventures, Liverpool is making a name for itself in the dining scene. Homegrown talent, such as Michelin-mentioned chef Paul Durand and Sam Grainger of small-plates spot Belzan and Mexican taqueria Madre, are putting the city on the map.

So who else made the cut? Time Out's list includes cities from all over the world, including Naples, Johannesburg, Lima, Ho Chi Minh City, Beijing, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai, Dubai, Portland, Medellín, Seville, Porto, Marrakech, Lyon, Sydney, Montreal, Osaka, and Copenhagen. It's a diverse and exciting mix of culinary destinations.

But what is the must-eat dish if you're visiting Liverpool? It has to be scouse - a hearty meat stew that gave locals their nickname. Made with tender meat and slow-cooked vegetables, it's a traditional dish that shouldn't be missed. And one of the best places to try it is at SKAUS, served in a bread bowl.

If street food is more your style, head to the Baltic Market. It was the first venue to bring street food to Liverpool in 2017 and features a variety of independent traders. Liverpool-born travel writer Katie Rosseinsky recommends trying Hafla Hafla's famous halloumi fries and La Bistroteca, a new venture from former Maray head chef Livia Alarcon.

For a caffeine fix, Bold Street is the place to be. Bold Street Coffee serves up delicious iced lattes and toasted brioche buns, while Leaf is a local institution known for its incredible tea selection and unique events, such as open mic nights and offline singles events.

In the top spot on Time Out's list is Naples, famous for its pizza. Johannesburg takes second place, praised for its South African delicacies like owetan kota sandwiches, bunny chow, and mala mogodu. And in third place is Lima, home to Central, the world's best restaurant.
