UK faces disruption on Christmas Eve due to high speed winds warned by Met Office.
Passengers waiting to travel from Euston Station to make their Christmas getaway this morning were met with another windy day in the UK. The Met Office issued two yellow warnings, predicting travel disruption for rail, plane and motorway services. Storm Pia had already caused havoc across the country and the warnings further warned of damaged buildings, trees brought down, and flooding of homes and power supply interruption.

The first warning stretches from 8am to 10pm across the north east of England. Scotland has been issued a warning from noon to 11.59pm on Saturday. Wales has been issued a warning for rain from yesterday evening until 6pm today.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Steven Keates said: “It’s a windy weekend for many, with some heavy rain expected too, especially in the west, with a number of weather warnings in force. Low pressure to the north of the UK is chiefly responsible for this period of unsettled weather, with a number of weather fronts bringing periods of heavy and persistent rain, particularly in western Scotland and Wales through Saturday and into Sunday."

Chief Meteorologist Paul Gundersen gave an update on the weather conditions this weekend and for Christmas Day, saying: “Christmas Day looks like being fairly unsettled in northern and western areas. Any showers in the north could be wintry with hail and thunder. The south of the country will see the best of the drier and brighter conditions. While temperatures will be near normal for the time of year it will be a windy day for many meaning it will feel colder. Beyond Christmas Day further rain or showers and strong winds are likely for many, and again any sleet and snow will be mainly over the hills of Scotland, as is often the case in December.”

Those making their Christmas getaway today should remain aware of the ongoing warnings and keep up to date with the latest updates on Storm Pia with The Agency’s live blog.
