It has been reported that two people were tragically killed by elephants on Monday in separate incidents in the Sundargarh district. The first incident took place in the Koira forest range, under the Bonai division, while the second occurred near Sona Parbat, under the Rourkela forest division. The victims were identified as Samuel Sainda and Sukramani Samasi, both residents of the district.
According to sources, Samuel, a resident of Jhirpani village in the Koira range, had gone out early in the morning to relieve himself. Little did he know that he would come face to face with a male elephant. Despite his attempts to escape, the elephant caught hold of him with its trunk and trampled him, leaving him lifeless on the spot. The Forest department was alerted and they later recovered Samuel's body and sent it for post-mortem.
A Forest official stated that the initial amount for Samuel's cremation has been given to his family and they will receive full compensation after the official report is released. The official also mentioned that for the past few days, a herd of elephants from Jharkhand has been causing havoc in the area and despite the efforts of Forest personnel, they keep returning.
In the second incident, Sukramani, a 75-year-old resident of Sona Parbat, was killed by a tusker while she was collecting forest produce. Her relatives shared that she suddenly came face to face with the elephant and in her attempt to escape, she fell down and lost her life. These incidents have left the villagers in a state of fear and distress.
The Forest department has assured that they will intensify their efforts to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. They have also urged the villagers to stay cautious and alert, especially when venturing into the forest areas. The loss of these two lives is a tragic reminder of the need for coexistence and respect for the wildlife.
