The Beauty of Our Wellness is a non-profit organization based in the vibrant city of Washington, D.C. that is dedicated to a noble cause. Their mission is to bring to light the issue of uterine health disparities that disproportionately affect the African American community. And they're doing it in a unique way - through wellness and arts-related events.

The organization was established in January of 2024 by two remarkable women, Khaleelah Harris and Yasmine Griffiths. Their shared passion for helping others led them to create this organization with a specific focus on assisting women who are struggling with the financial burden of uterine fibroid treatments. This cause hits close to home for Harris, who bravely shared her personal journey with uterine fibroids. Her story inspired the duo to combine their talents and address the needs of their community by providing special experiences.

One of the ways The Beauty of Our Wellness achieves its goal is through The Beauty of Our Wellness Fund. This fund provides financial aid to low-income and uninsured individuals with uteruses who are facing steep medical bills or lack the funds to cover the costs of surgical procedures for their uterine fibroid-related issues. As reported by BLACK ENTERPRISE, a study by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences found that 70% to 80% of Black women will develop benign uterine fibroid tumors by their late 40s. Additionally, research shows that Black women are more likely to require surgical intervention due to the condition, which can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and other uncomfortable symptoms.

The Beauty of Our Wellness also runs a Uterine Fibroids Awareness Campaign. This campaign disseminates valuable research on women's uterine health, provides a directory of Black Women OB/GYNs who specialize in fibroid treatments, and connects individuals with much-needed financial assistance during their treatment journey.

It's no surprise that the co-founders of The Beauty of Our Wellness, Harris and Griffiths, are passionate about their cause. Harris has a background in art curation and event organizing, while Griffiths is a Howard University Medical student and yoga instructor. Their combined expertise and drive have led them to go above and beyond to help their community. Harris, in particular, was motivated to support others after enduring a complicated process of seeking medical help for her own uterine fibroids. She underwent surgery to remove a massive 5" x 7" x 7" fibroid and knew she had to do something to make a difference.

The co-founders also drew inspiration from a 2023 Black Maternal Health charity art exhibition hosted by Tonya Wright, MD. Recently, the friends put together The Beauty of Our Wellness Awareness Luncheon and Fundraiser at the beautiful Fathom Gallery in Georgetown. This event, along with other sessions hosted by the organization throughout the year, provides a safe space for women to learn and openly discuss their health. In a mini-documentary featuring the organization's team, they emphasize the importance of creating a welcoming environment for women to share and learn about wellness.
