Navi Mumbai: In a major breakthrough, the Panvel Taluka Police have arrested two persons from a notorious gang of robbers who have been preying on truckers and other travellers on the Mumbai-Pune expressway. The gang was found to have committed several robberies at various locations along the expressway.
The accused have been identified as Mangesh Bhau Pawar, 27, and Avinash Maruti Dharpawar, 21. As per the police, they recovered stolen items worth ₹11,000 from them.
The incident came to light when the police registered a case of robbery after the complainant, Dayashankar Jagdish Narayan Mishra, reported being robbed of cash and other documents at the Panvel exit of the Mumbai-Pune expressway. Unfortunately, due to the lack of CCTVs in the vicinity, the police had very little evidence to go on.
However, with the help of the guidance of Anil Patil, senior police inspector, a team of policemen set out to investigate the case. The team then received information from sources that the accused were residents of Khalapur Taluka. Based on this information, the police nabbed the two suspects with a thorough technical investigation.
During interrogation, the duo confessed to having committed similar robberies in Talegaon, Kamshet, Pune, as well as on the Mumbai Pune Expressway and Old Mumbai Pune Highway. The police also managed to seize goods worth ₹11,000 from the accused. According to the investigation, Mangesh Bhau Pawar has 9 cases registered against him.
The search for the remaining two suspects continues. The police have also arrested a Delhi man for a Rs 35 lakh robbery from the Western Express Highway.
