Two female tigers from Maharashtra are doing well, according to a Similipal forest official.
In Baripada, a town located in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, officials from the Similipal Tiger Reserve provided an update on the two tigresses that were recently brought in from Maharashtra. Despite one of them, a three-year-old named Zeenat, wandering into the nearby forests of West Bengal, both tigresses are reported to be in good health.

According to STR's field director, Prakash Chand Gogineni, tigress Jamuna is doing well and thriving within the Similipal landscape. However, Zeenat decided to explore the neighboring state of West Bengal on Friday morning. Gogineni further explained that both the forest departments of Odisha and West Bengal are working together to track Zeenat's movements through her radio collar. They are also making efforts to guide her back into the reserve.

These two tigresses, Jamuna and Zeenat, were brought to STR from Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra with the purpose of introducing a new gene pool to the tiger population. This initiative is a part of the All Odisha Tiger Estimation 2023-24 report, which states that Similipal is currently home to around 27 tigers and 12 cubs.

Jamuna was brought to STR on October 27, while Zeenat arrived on November 15 and was released into the wild on November 24. Gogineni ensured that the tigress is being closely monitored, and she has already made a successful hunt. However, Zeenat's adventurous spirit led her to travel to Jharkhand on December 10. A week later, on December 17, she was spotted hunting a buffalo in the Rajabasa jungles near Chakulia.

Despite Zeenat's brief excursion, the officials at STR are confident that she will eventually return to Similipal and continue to thrive in her new home. The team is also thrilled with the progress of their project to diversify the tiger population in the reserve and eagerly await the results of the upcoming tiger estimation report. This is a promising step towards the conservation of these majestic creatures.
