Breaking news - a tragic accident on a Spanish dual-carriageway has claimed the lives of two British nationals and left another in critical condition. The incident occurred when their car collided with a suspected drug trafficker's speedboat that had come off its trailer on a vehicle ahead of them.
According to police, the trio were the first to hit the 'narcolancha' as it landed on the road near the popular resort of La Manga. The impact also caused a mass pile-up involving eight other vehicles and injuring multiple people.
Authorities have confirmed that the victims were British men aged 47 to 54. The driver of the vehicle pulling the suspect vessel, however, fled the scene and is still at large.
The horrific crash took place around 9:30pm last night on the RM-12, also known as the La Manga motorway, between La Manga and Cartagena. Initial reports described the victims as two women, believed to be foreign tourists in their 40s. However, it was later clarified by a Civil Guard spokesman that they were actually British men.
The spokesman stated, "The accident occurred on the RM-12 in the municipality of El Algar around 9:30pm last night. A car carrying three British men collided with a semi-rigid boat that had fallen off a trailer on the road. Sadly, two of the men passed away and the third, who was driving, sustained critical injuries. Additionally, eight other people in six vehicles behind them were also involved in the collision and suffered injuries."
At this time, the driver of the vehicle carrying the speedboat has not been apprehended. The boat itself bears the characteristics of a 'narco lancha' used in drug trafficking, and an investigation is currently underway.
It is yet to be determined if the British nationals were tourists or residents in the area. There is also no information available on whether they were driving a rental car or their own vehicle.
A spokesman for the regional emergency response coordination center confirmed that the two fatalities were British men, contrary to earlier reports that they were women. In a statement, they said, "Emergency responders received over 30 calls around 9:32pm yesterday regarding a multiple traffic collision on the RM-12 towards La Manga. Witnesses reported a pile-up involving eight vehicles, caused by a semi-rigid Zodiac that fell from a trailer it was being transported on. Several callers mentioned that some vehicles had rolled multiple times and there were trapped and injured individuals. Five ambulances, along with Civil Protection workers, firefighters, and Civil Guard patrols, were dispatched to the scene. Unfortunately, two people lost their lives. A 21-year-old man was treated at the scene, while four others - two women aged 18 and 55 and two men aged 19 and 29 - were taken to Santa Lucia Hospital in Cartagena. A 51-year-old man was transported to La Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia."
