On Friday, police made a tragic discovery in Ipswich, Suffolk. Inside a temporary housing unit, they found the body of a two-year-old girl. An initial Home Office post-mortem was conducted, yet further tests are necessary. Formal identification of the child has yet to take place.
Two people were arrested in relation to the death. Scott Jeff and Chelsea Gleason-Mitchell, both 22 and of no fixed address, were taken into custody on Saturday. The two are known to the victim and had previously resided in Bedfordshire.
The pair have now been charged with murder and are set to appear in Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. Furthermore, a mandatory referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct regarding previous contact with the deceased elsewhere.
Superintendent Jane Topping had the following to say about the tragedy: “We are still looking to establish the exact circumstances leading to the death of this child. Clearly, such a discovery is extremely distressing for everyone concerned. We’d ask people not to speculate on social media as to the identity of the child or to the circumstances surrounding her death.”
It is a heartbreaking incident that has left the community reeling and in search of answers. We can only hope that justice is served and that the family receives the closure they deserve.
