Jami and Rubi have given the best Christmas gift to their family by arriving four weeks early at St John's Hospital in Livingston, Scotland. Though they were born on each side of midnight, they won't share the same birthday.
Adeeqa Parveen Ali, 31, and her partner Faisal Imran were already at the hospital on Christmas Eve, expecting the arrival of the twins. Jami was born first at 11.44pm, weighing 5lb 8oz, followed by his sister Rumi at 12.27am, tipping the scales at 4lb 2oz.
Both Jami and Rumi, along with their mother, will be staying at the hospital for a few days, though they hope to be able to leave by Hogmanay. Although Rumi was close to being the first Christmas baby in Scotland, she was pipped to the post by Eliza Shearer in Aberdeen.
Eliza's parents, Maja Shearer, 27, and Jason Shearer, 28, had to rush to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on Christmas Eve as Eliza made an appearance a few days before she was due. This meant that Maja's parents, who were visiting from Poland, had to host the traditional Christmas Eve celebration without the expectant parents in their home.
Recalling the event, Jason said, “Maja’s Polish, so we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve and British Christmas on Christmas Day, and Maja’s folks are over just now so they had to host Christmas dinner without us last night because we’re here, and they’ll probably get a nice Christmas dinner again today.” Jason was sleeping when Maja went into labour at 5.30am. Eliza was born at 12.18am, weighing 7lbs 8oz. Jason said it was “touch and go” whether she would be born before or after midnight.
The new father also extended his gratitude to the midwifery staff at the hospital, who he said had been “absolutely amazing”. It was definitely a remarkable start to the festive season for these families.
