Tree felling; Karnataka Forest Department will file charge sheet

Madikeri; Details of the people who felled 800 trees, in K Nidugane village near here a month back, are yet to be known. It is said that the land belonged to KHB which awarded the work to a contractor, to level the land to construct a housing layout. Following heavy criticism from people, the state government suspended DCF Manjunath who gave permission to fell trees, by violating the law. According to the law, three trees can be felled in a acre, but in this case, more than 800 trees were felled, in 83 acres. Normally, the trees would be shifted to forest depot as it is unredeem land. But, here there is no record that the forest department had awarded a tender to fell the trees. The issue came to light on June 5, last month and the forest department filed the FIR on June 10. The PCCF had ordered to file a charge sheet against the accused.
