A two-day workshop on the implementation of the new pension system for employees of urban local bodies was held at the conference hall of the State Urban Development Agency in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. The event was attended by accountants from 40 ULBs, including five municipal corporations and 35 municipalities from across the state. The workshop was inaugurated by Debasis Singh, the director of Municipal Administration, who emphasized the significance of the NPS in establishing a sustainable and transparent pension mechanism for ULB employees. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining seamless coordination with the Directorate of Treasuries and Inspection.

During the workshop, Financial Advisor Sikha Biswal shed light on the key aspects of the NPS, with a particular focus on the vital role of ULB accountants in managing employee contributions and ensuring proper fund management. This was followed by a speech from the project director of SUDA, Rabindra Kumar Sahu, who stressed the importance of capacity building in ULBs for the smooth operation of the NPS. Sahu emphasized that proper training would lead to better financial management and accountability, which are crucial for the success of the pension system. Nishikanta Mishra, the joint director of DTI, also held a detailed technical session on the operational aspects of the NPS.

The workshop also featured interactive Q&A sessions where participants had the opportunity to seek clarification on any practical challenges they may have faced during the implementation of the NPS. With the knowledge gained from this workshop, ULB accountants can play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and successful implementation of the NPS, ultimately benefiting all ULB employees.
