Tragic landslide in Koraput, Odisha claims lives of three women.
Tragedy struck in the district of Koraput, as three young women lost their lives in a heartbreaking accident. Purni Badnaik, 18, Sanmati Jani, 17, and Champa Badnayak, 18, were the unfortunate victims of a landslide caused by a dump of murram on the banks of Kolab dam. These young women, hailing from the nearby village of Salmanguda, had gone to the hill to collect murram in front of a temple near the dam in Kerenga panchayat, under the jurisdiction of Koraput block.

As they were digging, a sudden landslide occurred, trapping them under the heavy dump of murram. Despite the efforts of a 19-member team comprising of Koraput Sadar police, fire brigade personnel, and ODRAF personnel, the women could not be saved. Their bodies were eventually recovered and sent for post-mortem to the SLN Medical College and Hospital in Koraput. The local police have also launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause and prevent similar accidents in the future.

The tragic loss of these young lives has left the community in shock and mourning. In response, Sub-Collector Benudhar Shabar has announced a financial assistance of Rs 20,000 from the district Red-Cross fund for the bereaved families. This gesture of support and compassion will hopefully provide some relief to the grieving families and help them cope with their loss.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that come with living in hilly areas and the need for caution while engaging in activities near hills and dams. As the community mourns the loss of these young women, we can only hope that such accidents can be prevented in the future through proper measures and precautions. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased, and we pray for their strength and healing during this difficult time.
