Recently, a video surveillance footage emerged showing an interaction between an Alabama father, police, and a repo man that took place on September 29th. Tragically, the father, 39-year-old Stephen Perkins, was killed by police officers outside of his home in Decatur, Alabama.
The video footage captured the tow truck driver taking the dead man’s vehicle immediately after officers allegedly shot Perkins. Police claimed that Perkins had brandished a firearm, so the officer fired 18 shots at him, with seven bullets hitting the family man.
The family disputes the claim that the truck was being repossessed due to not being able to pay. Furthermore, the video does not show the police officers giving Perkins first aid before the ambulance arrived, which is what Decatur police spokeswoman Irene Cardenas-Martinez had initially reported. The Perkins family believes that their father was ambushed by the police officers who never gave him the chance to comply with instructions to get on the ground.
A neighbor, Susan Capps, who lives across the street told a different story. She said that she did not witness the police rendering first aid to Perkins. Instead, she heard them say “Put the gun down. Put the gun down.” She then heard Perkins say “Help” before she heard an officer call for an ambulance. She also said that when she asked one of the officers about Perkins, the person allegedly lied and told her that he was fine.
The Decatur Police Department has completed an investigation of the incident. Chief Todd Pinion will review the findings and determine if disciplinary actions will be taken, before giving his recommendation to Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling. The police officer who shot Perkins has been placed on leave while the incident is under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
