Tragedy struck on the Geong bridge in Indonesia on Wednesday morning when a glass walkway suddenly shattered, claiming the life of one tourist and injuring three others.
The eleven tourists were all from Cilacep, Central Java, and the terrifying incident was caught on camera. Two of them fell through the glass and one was declared dead, while two more were thrown by the collapse and managed to cling on and were helped off by brave onlookers. Another tourist struggled to climb back up and was helped off as well. Three other tourists sustained minor injuries, while the rest managed to escape.
Police are now investigating the incident and have set up a crime scene. It is believed that safety concerns were ignored and the management had received complaints about the bridge’s safety. In April when the bridge opened, Ekop Purnomo, chairman of the Limpakuwus Pine Forest cooperative where the bridge is located, contacted the bridge manager seeking a safety evaluation. He was responding to complaints about the bridge’s safety raised on social media, with 5% of visitors sharing their concerns. However, the manager chose not to attend the meeting to review the standards, instead sending a representative. At the request of local police, the forest was closed while the investigation continues. Banyumas City Police chief Suranta Sitepu confirmed the casualties on Wednesday.
