In a recent press conference held in Kolkata, Trinamool Congress leader Abhisekh Banerjee expressed his strong accusations against the BJP for orchestrating the Sandeshkhali episode. He claimed that a video had surfaced which proved the TMC's stance that the saffron party was behind the incidents. The allegations included sexual abuse and land grab by TMC leaders in the North 24 Parganas district.
Banerjee was visibly upset as he stated that he never thought the politics of Bengal would stoop so low in order to gain votes. He firmly believed that a "shameless attempt" was made to tarnish the image of Bengal just before the elections. The TMC later released a video on social media, allegedly featuring Gangadhar Kayl, a BJP mandal president in Sandeshkhali. In the video, Kayl can be heard saying that the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, was the mastermind behind the entire conspiracy.
However, it should be noted that the authenticity of the video has not been verified by PTI. While Adhikari denied the allegations and claimed the video was doctored, Kayl filed a complaint to the CBI stating that the video was morphed and edited. Banerjee, who is considered the second-in-command in the TMC, accused Adhikari of orchestrating the Sandeshkhali incident in order to create grounds for the imposition of Article 355 in Bengal.
Banerjee further expressed his outrage over the allegations made against TMC leaders in Sandeshkhali, claiming that it was an attempt to malign the state. He demanded an apology from the BJP's top leadership within 48 hours for their actions and for "maligning" Bengal in this manner. Banerjee also questioned what Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had mentioned the Sandeshkhali incidents in his election rallies, would have to say now.
In response to the TMC's allegations, Adhikari dismissed the video as "fake and doctored". He insinuated that the TMC was trying to divert attention and that there have been numerous complaints by women from Sandeshkhali. Meanwhile, Kayl filed a written complaint to the CBI, stating that the video was uploaded from an unverified YouTube channel owned by someone named "Williams". He claimed that the video was created using his face and had been edited using artificial intelligence in order to mislead the public.
In his complaint, Kayl also provided the link to the YouTube video as evidence. The matter remains under investigation by PTI.
