Tinie Tempah has come a long way since his debut single Pass Out was released in 2010. The celebrated rapper has collaborated with global superstars and seen his music soar to new heights. But despite the astronomical professional success, Tinie admits that becoming a dad was the single most ‘positive’ achievement in his life to date.
When Tinie welcomed a little girl in December 2018, he couldn’t contain his pride. He told The Agency: ‘It’s been nothing but an absolute positive in my life and I think it’s motivated me to go even beyond my wildest expectations.’
Tinie’s perspective has changed since meeting his tiny tot. He said: ‘When I was a teenager, I just wanted to be a rapper and now I want to be so much more than that. It’s been nothing but a great thing and as I said at the beginning, I’m a huge advocate of the family unit – in any way that I can show that or celebrate that or express that, I will.’
Tinie’s journey to fatherhood has also forced him to reflect on his own childhood and how his parents approached his life’s ambitions. He recalled: ‘I’m speaking as someone who’s been doing this since I was 15 or 16 with my actual immediate family not really understanding what I was doing. It was a constant fight.’
The star expressed his hope that his daughter will be able to join him on tour and be a part of his work. He revealed: ‘I think it’s very important for me that my family see what I do and they understand it and they enjoy it.’
Tinie also confirmed that his daughter will have an impact on the messages he sends into the ether. He concluded: ‘I’ve looked at my peers that have come before me and ended up having kids and ended up having daughters for example. There’s always that question, “Oh, is this gonna change some of your lyrical content?” The truth is, it probably will but I’m just trying to make sure that it doesn’t too much because it’s still its own kind of separate art form.’
The ‘Rise By Tinie’ range features three intuitive, innovative and individualist products, inspired by Tinie’s own experiences as a dad. Available online at John Lewis and in-store at John Lewis Oxford Street, Leeds, Newcastle, Glasgow and Manchester.
