Today, London is in meltdown as temperatures are set to rise above 30 °C across southern England for the seventh day in a row. This follows Saturday being named the hottest day of the year so far. May we all spare a thought for King Charles' Guards outside Buckingham Palace, still sporting real bear fur hats.
Amid the heatwave, a yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued for Northern Ireland, northern parts of England and Wales from 2pm until 11.59pm today. The thunderstorms could lead to flash flooding, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds – with possible interruptions to road access and public transport if such circumstances were to occur.
Met Office meteorologist Rachel Ayers said: “As we go into the start of Sunday those showers across the south west will make their way north-eastwards into Wales and the Midlands and later on into northern England, Northern Ireland, and southern Scotland. Now these showers could be heavy and thundery too. So we do have a yellow thunderstorm warning out for those northern regions that I mentioned.”
She added that things will start to “brighten up a little” into Sunday afternoon, with the best weather seen in the south east. Temperatures could reach 31-32 °C, making it the seventh consecutive day that 30 °C has been recorded somewhere in the UK this September.
Monday is still forecasted “very warm and humid”, but temperatures are edging downwards slightly, with more cloud around. The Met Office said the maximum temperature could reach 29 °C. So, we may have one last chance to enjoy the summer sunshine before thunderstorms roll in.
