Residents living in three states on the east coast have been given a heads up to expect some pretty rough weather in the coming days. A strong cold front is currently making its way over parts of Australia, and the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting severe rain and damaging winds for New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania.
According to Jonathon How from the Bureau of Meteorology, today is looking quite unstable, with a risk of thunderstorms throughout much of inland New South Wales and Melbourne. This weather warning comes as the cold front moves from South Australia this afternoon towards New South Wales and Victoria this evening, and Tasmania tomorrow morning.
In New South Wales, the western parts will be the first to feel the impact of the front tonight, before it moves to the central parts tomorrow morning. Residents in the Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Riverina, Snowy Mountains, and the Australian Capital Territory are advised to be prepared for heavy rainfall of up to 80mm and gusts of up to 130 km/h, which could potentially cause flash flooding.
Victoria is also expected to be hit by the cold front tonight, before it heads towards the northeast parts of the state tomorrow morning. Those living in the North East and parts of Central, East Gippsland, Northern Country, North Central, and West and South Gippsland can expect similar conditions, with heavy rainfall and gusts of up to 110 km/h.
However, the good news is that conditions in both states are expected to ease below the warning level by late afternoon or evening tomorrow. In the meantime, it is advised for residents in these areas to avoid travel if possible, and to stay away from dangerous hazards like floodwater and fallen powerlines.
Moving on to Tasmania, the cold front will reach the Furneaux Islands, North East, Central North, and parts of the East Coast, North West Coast, Central Plateau, and Midlands. Up to 80mm of rain is forecast for some areas, along with gusts of up to 100 km/h. The cold front is expected to move across the state by tomorrow afternoon, bringing some relief from the extreme weather.
For those living in areas under warning, it is important to take precautions such as avoiding travel, staying away from floodwater and fallen powerlines, and seeking refuge at the highest place in case of flash flooding.
