Do you ever wonder what the next console from Nintendo will be like? I certainly do. As a reader, I am feeling extremely optimistic about the potential of their new console and the exciting new games and next-generation graphics it may bring.
I know everyone is talking about Xbox this week, but I just can't bring myself to join in. It's all too depressing. While I haven't owned an Xbox since the 360, I can guarantee that I will never touch one of their consoles again, or even their games if they are available on other platforms. The way developers are treated like mere statistics on a spreadsheet, easily discarded at a moment's notice, while their bosses pretend to be sad for a few seconds before moving on, is just disheartening.
But let's change the subject and talk about something more positive. Nintendo has finally admitted that they are working on a new console, and it's coming out soon-ish! I was thrilled to see the news that yet another source has confirmed it will be as powerful as the Xbox Series S. That is truly exciting news. I know some may say it's just overexcited fans speculating, but we have heard this same rumor multiple times now, so I am daring to hope that it's actually true.
Of course, there is also the hope that Nintendo won't make the same mistakes as PlayStation. Sony has made some questionable decisions lately, and I just can't understand their reasoning. But I have faith that Nintendo won't follow in their footsteps. They are not blind to the reason why the Switch was such a huge success. And while they may try a few live service games, I don't see them abandoning their successful formula.
However, there are some concerns about rising costs and longer development times. The recent statement from the president didn't exactly ease my worries. But I have a feeling it was just a casual remark, and he didn't want to reveal too much. So for the sake of this feature, let's assume that Nintendo will stay true to their sensible approach and not take eight years to develop each game.
Just imagine the possibilities with a console as powerful as the Xbox Series S. We saw Nintendo's technical prowess with Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but now imagine that in 4K with even more detailed characters and textures. I'm not saying they will do that, but the fact that they could is enough to get me excited. And let's not forget about the next Zelda game, built from the ground up for the Switch 2!
The Switch is an incredible machine, possibly the best console ever made. But it had to endure the pandemic, which slowed down Nintendo's development for a couple of years. Who knows how many more games we would have seen if that hadn't happened, like the rumored 40th anniversary Donkey Kong game.
But if we can avoid a similar situation in the future, then Nintendo will have a clear runway to create even more games, both from new and established franchises. We all know they will come up with some brand new IP, and the thought of that is always thrilling. And let's not forget about the next Mario, Mario Kart, Metroid, and all the other beloved franchises.
But the biggest change this time around is that the Switch 2 will be able to run almost all current-gen games. Microsoft has made sure that the Xbox Series S can do it, so we can expect the same from Nintendo. Maybe not the most demanding titles like GTA 6, but with the success of the Switch 2, I'm sure even Rockstar and Nintendo will find a way.
Sure, there may be a few bumps on the road, but if Nintendo can avoid them (and I'm sure they can), then the Switch 2 has the potential to become the best console of all time, just like its predecessor. And I, for one, cannot wait to see what they have in store for us.
