Get ready for an exciting new adventure as we embark on a dinosaur hunt! Turok, a beloved franchise from the Nintendo 64 era, is making a comeback after a failed reboot in 2008. This time around, players will team up with friends to take on the ultimate challenge of tracking down and taking down dinosaurs.
Although Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was once a beloved game, it has lost its relevance over the years. The original trilogy on the Nintendo 64 was followed by a prequel, Turok: Evolution, in 2002. However, it received lukewarm reviews and the first reboot in 2008 was also met with disappointment. Unfortunately, the developer, Propaganda Games, was shut down in 2011 while working on a sequel.
Since then, there has only been one spin-off game in 2019, titled Turok: Escape From The Lost Valley, which was not related to the previous games. But now, there is hope for a revival with the announcement of Turok: Origins by developer Saber Interactive at The Game Awards.
From what we've seen in the trailer, Turok: Origins seems to capture the essence of the original game while introducing a new third-person perspective. The gameplay looks similar to Gears Of War, with a combination of shooting and melee attacks. And just like that series, the main campaign can be played solo or with up to three friends in co-op mode.
According to the Steam description, players will have a variety of weapons at their disposal, including plasma rifles, ray guns, sniper rifles, bows, shotguns, and DNA powers that can evolve their suit in real-time. These DNA powers can be unlocked and upgraded by extracting DNA from enemies and the environment.
In addition to battling dinosaurs, players will also face an alien threat that aims to destroy all human life in the galaxy. This is hinted at in the trailer with the appearance of a massive spaceship flying overhead.
Turok: Origins is a promising new addition to the franchise, paying homage to the past while introducing new elements. Saber Interactive has a good track record with Gears Of War-style games, as seen with their success in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. And for those who want to relive the original Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, it is available on various platforms, including the Nintendo Switch Online service and a 2015 remaster for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
As for the release date of Turok: Origins, there is currently no official announcement for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, so it may be a few years before we can get our hands on it. Interestingly, Saber Interactive is also working on another dinosaur game, Jurassic Park: Survival, with no release date yet.
Fans of the Dino Crisis series may be wondering if there will be a new installment in the future. Unfortunately, there is no news from Capcom about a new Dino Crisis game at the moment.
