Is there really going to be a new PlayStation Portable? One reader is buzzing with excitement over rumors of Sony developing a new handheld device, along with talk of a possible Switch 2 and a growing number of PC options.
My very first gaming console was a Game Boy Color, and ever since then, I've secretly preferred portable systems over home consoles. I think my parents got it for me because it was cheaper, but I loved the freedom of being able to play outside while still gaming. It was the perfect way to avoid people without being too rude.
Playing on the go was like having a mobile phone back then. As long as the batteries lasted, you could play whenever and wherever you wanted. It was a dream come true for a young gamer like myself.
We weren't a wealthy family, so while my friends were playing with Game Gears and Lynxes, I didn't get another new portable until the PSP. I could have gone with a DS, but I was drawn to the superior graphics of the PlayStation device, even though I now realize that the game selection wasn't as great.
I was a huge fan of the PSP, and later the PS Vita, but by the time those consoles came out, it was clear that portable systems were becoming less popular. Many casual gamers no longer saw the appeal, especially with the rise of smartphones.
I never quite understood this shift, as phones back then were much simpler than they are now. But that was the direction the industry was heading in. Then, Nintendo released the Switch, and it changed everything. It marked the end of traditional portable systems and the beginning of a new type of gaming device.
I love my Switch, but the best thing about it is that it paved the way for other companies to create similar devices. Now, there are tons of copycat systems, and there are even rumors of Xbox and Sony bringing back their own versions of the portable console.
However, my only concern is that in the pre-Switch era, portable games were often quite different from home console games. With the Switch and other similar devices, games are no longer specifically designed for handheld play; they are just regular home console games that happen to be portable.
I would love to see Nintendo and Sony create more games specifically tailored for portable play, like they used to. They may only be smaller indie or download-only titles, but it would be a nod to the traditional portable gaming experience that many of us miss.
Overall, I am thrilled at the prospect of more portable consoles from all companies. I can't help but wonder why they ever went away in the first place. With the technology available now, the possibilities for portable gaming are endless.
