As a reader, I'm not a fan of this current generation of consoles when it comes to looks. The PlayStation 5 is an ugly slab of consumer electronics, and the Xbox Series X isn't much better. It's true that the PS5 has a unique colour scheme, but that's not enough to make it attractive. When I realised how big it was, I was horrified. Not only that, but it also has to be placed on a rickety stand in order to lay it horizontally. It's apparently this size due to a pair of massive fans, yet the Series X, which is even more powerful, doesn't need anything like that.
Going round to my sister's house made this fact even more apparent. Her child had his PS5 out on the table in his bedroom and it was huge. It looks much smaller sat under the TV, but that illusion is quickly shattered when it's out in the open.
My friend's Xbox Series X was just as bad. It was standing vertically in the corner, and when I asked him to lay it down I realised it truly was an awkwardly shaped lump of plastic. It couldn't even look like a fridge, all it looked like was a slab of rock.
This is without a doubt the ugliest generation of consoles we've ever seen. The PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X both look like they've fallen out of the ugly tree. The American SNES is the Elephant Man of video game consoles. Even the Mega Drive and SNES from other regions were at least aesthetically pleasing.
That's why I hope the PS5 Slim model will feature a significant redesign. In previous generations, the Slim model was a minor thing, and the main point of interest was usually just a price drop. But this time, the redesign is the most important reason for getting the Slim. I'd rather have a boring black box than this eyesore. It might not be the prettiest, but at least I won't need to vomit after looking at it.
