The mother of Charlise Mutten testifies in the trial of her partner's murder.
Kallista Mutten is currently facing allegations that she was the one who shot and killed her own daughter, Charlise. She is giving evidence in the murder trial of her former partner, Justin Stein, who has pleaded not guilty to the crime. Today marks the second day of Mutten's testimony in the NSW Supreme Court.

According to Stein, he witnessed Mutten shoot their nine-year-old daughter. Charlise's body was discovered by police in a barrel by the Blue Mountains' Colo River on January 18, 2022. She had been shot multiple times in the face and back. On Monday, Mutten spent the entire day giving evidence and will now have to undergo cross-examination by Stein's lawyer, Carolyn Davenport SC.

During the trial, it was revealed that following his arrest, Stein told a corrections officer that he was traumatized after seeing Mutten shoot their daughter. He claimed that he heard a gunshot and then Charlise screaming for him before running back to find that Mutten had shot her again.

Davenport informed the jury during her opening address that it would become clear that Mutten, not Stein, had a motive to kill their daughter. At the time of her death, Charlise was visiting her mother and Stein over the Christmas holidays from her full-time home with her grandparents in Tweed Heads.

During their time together, they split their time between a property owned by Stein's mother in Mount Wilson and a caravan at the Riviera Ski Park, which was about 90 minutes away. Witnesses who lived near the Mount Wilson property testified that they overheard conversations about Charlise's custody, which hinted at plans to not send her back to Queensland.

One neighbor recounted attending a dinner with his wife and mother-in-law, where Stein, his mother, Charlise, and Mutten were also present. He recalled Stein saying that if anything were to happen and Charlise didn't return to Queensland, he would end up in prison again.

During her testimony on Monday, Mutten revealed that she last saw her daughter on January 11 when Charlise traveled alone to spend the night with Stein at Mount Wilson while Mutten stayed at the caravan park. The following day, Stein claimed that he left Charlise in the care of an auctioneer who was working at their Blue Mountains property.

Stein said that Charlise was vomiting and too unwell to travel, but reassured Mutten that she was in good hands because the woman was a mother of three and "practically a nurse." However, Stein later told Mutten that he believed the woman was not who she claimed to be and that Charlise may have been taken by his former associates from his criminal past.

Mutten told the court through tears that she suggested calling the police, but Stein refused, saying that they would kill Charlise if they did. On January 13, while Stein's phone data showed him traveling to multiple boat ramps in Sydney and eventually to the exact location where Charlise's body was found, Mutten believed that he was "going to war" to find their daughter.

She testified that Stein told her he was going to places where he thought Charlise might be and get her back. Later on, Mutten received a call from Stein saying that he had "badly hurt" the man he had believed to be holding Charlise captive and had stabbed him. When he returned in the early hours of the morning, Stein told Mutten, "It's not them, you can call the police in the morning."

Mutten called the police to report her daughter missing at around 8am the next day. As the trial continues, it is clear that there are still many unanswered questions surrounding the tragic death of young Charlise.
