The Metro Video Game Awards for 2024, according to GameCentral's picks for the best of the year.
Greetings, fellow gamers! As we near the end of 2024, it's time for GameCentral's mini-awards. We've seen some amazing releases this year, with stunning graphics, epic soundtracks, and even some impressive remakes. But let's not forget about the not-so-great games as well. Without further ado, let's dive into our list of the top 20 games of 2024.

First up, we have the award for Best Visuals. Now, it's no surprise that the best visuals of the year don't always belong to the best game. Such is the case with The Plucky Squire. While it may be a pretty game to look at, it falls short in terms of gameplay. The combination of 2D and 3D graphics is definitely interesting, but unfortunately, it doesn't quite work as well as we had hoped. However, we must give credit where credit is due. The game does have some unique ideas, such as the physical storybook that can manipulate the game world. But it's not enough to save it from being just a visual gimmick.

Next up, we have the award for Best Innovation. This year, we didn't see many new ideas, but one game stood out to us - The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom. In this spin-off game, players get to control Zelda herself and her ability to clone objects. While the game may not have fully utilized this concept, it's exciting to see the potential for future games. Our runner-up for this award is Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure.

Now, onto the Format of the Year. This one was a tough call, as no format really outshined the others. However, we have to give credit to the PC for not only having most of the best games of the year, but also for having some exclusive indie titles. Our runner-up for this award is the PlayStation 5.

Moving on to the Remake of the Year, we were pleasantly surprised by Silent Hill 2. Despite initial doubts, the game's remake by Bloober Team not only recreated the original with modern graphics and controls, but also added new areas, puzzles, and story elements seamlessly. And let's not forget about the impressive remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door as our runner-up.

Now, let's talk about music. While we may not have enjoyed Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess as a whole, we couldn't ignore its fantastic soundtrack. From jazz to traditional Japanese music, this game has it all. And our runner-up for this award is none other than Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Last but not least, we have the award for Best Storytelling. Metaphor: ReFantazio may seem like a Persona-inspired game, but it's in its plot and characters where it truly shines. Despite its fantasy world setting, the game tackles serious topics such as discrimination and populism. Our runner-up for this award is 1000xResist.

And now, onto our not-so-great games. The Worst Game of 2024 goes to Stranger Things VR. As a licensed game, it fails to live up to the show's standards with its lack of interactivity and unappealing graphics. Our runner-up for this award is Slitterhead.

And that's a wrap for our mini-awards! What do you think of our choices? Do you agree or do you have your own picks? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter. And don't forget to sign up for our newsletter for more gaming news and features. Until next time, happy gaming!
