The Met Office has provided an update on fog conditions this weekend, following numerous flight delays.
Yesterday, while a jogger was out on their morning run, they may have noticed the fog that blanketed the Port of Liverpool building. This thick fog has been causing major disruptions to flights across the UK and unfortunately, it seems like it will continue to linger into the weekend, according to forecasters.

The majority of airports in the country have been affected by this murky weather over the past few days. And for those planning to travel today, it doesn't look like the fog will be clearing up anytime soon, as reported by the Met Office. In fact, in some areas of the UK, visibility could be as low as 100 metres. However, no official warnings have been issued.

Met Office meteorologist Liam Eslick explained, "It's that time of year when people are constantly on the move and there are a lot of individuals on the roads. We're seeing a lot of fog covering a large portion of England, specifically the South East and central regions. But even the rest of the country is experiencing thick fog as well." He further added, "Saturday morning may be quite murky and the fog patches may take a bit longer to clear."

The effects of the fog were also felt at major airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick, where hundreds of flights were delayed and cancelled. According to tracker Flight Aware, Heathrow had 408 delayed flights and 24 cancellations yesterday, and 82 delayed flights and eight cancellations so far today. At Gatwick, there were 272 delayed flights and 30 cancellations yesterday, with 100 delays and five cancellations this morning.

Nats, the UK's primary air traffic control provider, released a statement on Friday saying, "Due to widespread fog, temporary air traffic restrictions are in place at several airports across the UK today. These measures are put in place to ensure the safety of all individuals." They also mentioned that they are closely monitoring the situation and have a Met Office expert working with them to provide the most up-to-date information. Their teams are also in close communication with airports and airlines to minimize any further disruption.

Mr Eslick also warned that the fog levels may drop even lower on Saturday, making it difficult for drivers in foggy areas. However, he did mention that conditions should improve on Sunday with the help of stronger winds. "The winds will pick up and push out the cloudy and murky conditions, helping to clear the fog," he explained.

But for those hoping for some sunshine amidst all this fog, it may not be possible in the near future. Mr Eslick stated, "It won't be as gloomy and unpleasant, but there will still be rain and strong winds across most of the country." In fact, the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain in Scotland on Monday and Tuesday.

So while the fog may be causing disruptions and delays, let's hope for some improved weather conditions in the coming days. Stay safe and cautious out there, especially if you're traveling in foggy areas.
