The MEAC is boldly leading the charge for gender equity in college sports leadership with action, not just words. Under the guidance of the MEAC's incredible Commissioner Sonja Stills, the first female to be named Commissioner of a Division I HBCU conference, the MEAC has built a diverse executive staff comprised of three females in senior leadership positions.

The MEAC is further setting an example of gender equality with five female athletics directors among its eight member institutions. These “Fabulous Five”, along with Commissioner Stills, are blazing a trail for gender equity at the leadership level in college sports.

The MEAC's impactful work comes at a critical time, as a February report from The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport issued an F grade for gender hiring at the FBS level due to the number of women working as athletic directors dropping from 13 to 10 in 2022, and only two of the 10 FBS leagues having women at the helm. The MEAC's stellar example is helping to turn this negative trend around.
