In Noida, the main suspect in the Hathras stampede that occurred on July 2, Devprakash Madhukar, was recently taken into custody by a magistrate court and is now being held for 14 days. Another individual, Sanju Yadav, who was also involved in the incident, has also been sent to jail for the same time period.
Earlier in the day, Hathras Superintendent of Police Nipun Agarwal informed the media that the police would be requesting for the court to grant them custody of Madhukar and the other suspects. According to Assistant Prosecution Officer Uma Shankar Yadav, both Madhukar and Yadav were presented before the court and were subsequently sent to judicial remand for the next two weeks.
Yadav went on to explain that Ramprakash Shakya, who was also arrested in connection with the stampede, will not be appearing in court until tomorrow as he was taken into custody after Madhukar and Yadav. Moreover, there are still some pending police procedures that need to be completed before his court appearance.
Madhukar was apprehended by the Special Operations Group of the Hathras police late Friday night in Delhi's Najafgarh area. Shakya and Yadav, on the other hand, were arrested in Hathras on Saturday, as confirmed by the police.
It is worth noting that Madhukar is the only identified suspect in the FIR, which also mentions other unnamed individuals as the organizers of the satsang. The tragic stampede occurred after a religious event organized by self-proclaimed godman Surajpal, also known as Narayan Sakar Hari or Bhole Baba, resulting in the unfortunate death of 121 individuals, mostly women.
