The government of Odisha plans to establish 38 model markets worth Rs 300 crore in the next two years.
The state government of Odisha has made a significant decision that will benefit the farmers, traders, and other stakeholders in the state. In a recent Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, a proposal was approved to establish 38 model mandis in 30 districts over the next two years. This project will require an estimated cost of Rs 300 crore, with the aim of streamlining and improving the marketing activities for the agricultural sector.

According to Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, these model mandis will serve as a one-stop-shop for all essential marketing needs, equipped with upgraded infrastructure and digital systems. In the first phase, 14 large mandis, 17 medium mandis, and 7 small mandis will be set up in the financial years 2025-26 and 2026-27. The resources for this project will be mobilized from the Regulated Market Committees, with an additional amount being provisioned from the state plan scheme. The Cooperation Department has already allocated Rs 50 crore for this purpose in the current financial year.

In the next phase, 62 more mandis will be developed as model mandis, with the identification process already underway. These modern mandis will provide facilities such as storage spaces, drying platforms, quality testing kiosks, cooling chambers, rest-sheds for farmers, clean toilets, and separate facilities for women farmers. Additionally, there will be eateries, bank branches, ATMs, parking spaces, and waste disposal facilities, all catering to the needs of the farming community.

The Cabinet has also given its approval for a tender of Rs 382.40 crore for 24x7 water supply to all households in Sambalpur, Burla, and Hirakud towns in western Odisha. This includes the construction of the entire project and its operation and maintenance for the next five years. The construction work is scheduled to commence in September and is expected to be completed by August 2027.

Another significant decision taken by the state government is the implementation of an LED public street light project in all 110 urban local bodies of Odisha, with an estimated cost of Rs 350 crore. This move aims to improve the infrastructure in the state and make it more efficient. Additionally, a world-class Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility for aircraft will be established at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Odisha. The Cabinet has also approved a special incentive package for the anchor MRO to facilitate the establishment of this facility. This will be the first major MRO facility in eastern India and a crucial step towards strengthening civil aviation infrastructure in Odisha.

Moreover, the state government has decided to set up a separate Directorate of Museums to better manage and coordinate the state's museums. Lastly, the Cabinet has approved the promulgation of rules for the recruitment of faculty in government-run colleges of nursing and ANM training centers. This will ensure better administration and coordination of these institutions. These decisions taken by the state government reflect their commitment towards the progress and development of Odisha.
