Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha, was abuzz with discussions and plans on Tuesday as Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi took charge of the review of the ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare department. With a focused approach, the Chief Minister directed the department to upgrade at least 14 high schools into higher secondary institutions.
In light of the high dropout rate in the state, Majhi stressed on the need to convert more high schools into higher secondary schools. He believed that this would provide better opportunities for students and reduce the dropout rate. The officials were advised to work towards achieving this goal with utmost dedication.
The condition of hostels for various primary schools managed by the department, especially in tribal-dominated districts, was also brought to light. The Chief Minister urged the department to take necessary steps to improve the facilities and ensure the well-being of the students. In line with the government's efforts to better the condition of 301 such hostels in the undivided Koraput district, Majhi suggested increasing their capacity to accommodate 100 students wherever possible.
Majhi was also keen on improving the quality of food provided to the children in these hostels. He emphasized on the importance of health, safety, and cleanliness in these institutions. The Chief Minister urged the ministers and secretaries to make regular visits to these schools and hostels to monitor their management.
The meeting also shed light on Odisha's high dropout rate of 27.3% at the secondary level, as per the SDG India Index 2023 released by NITI Aayog. This alarming statistic only reinforced the need for immediate action and the Chief Minister was determined to address this issue with the help of his team.
