The Texas Southern University Athletics Department is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Jesse Hurst, a former staff member, coach, and esteemed military veteran. At the age of 82, Hurst had led a remarkable life, born and raised in Houston's third ward in 1941. He was a proud graduate of Jack Yates High School and went on to receive an academic scholarship in both baseball and football at Oklahoma State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology.

Hurst was part of the second class of African-American recruits at OSU in 1958 and had the honor of being roommates with Chester Pittman, the first Black football player in the school's history. After his time at Oklahoma State, Hurst continued his education at Prairie View A&M University, earning a Master of Education degree, and later went on to receive a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from HBCU Texas Southern University.

In addition to his impressive academic achievements, Hurst had a distinguished military background. He graduated from the U.S. Army's War College in Leavenworth, KS, and served two tours in the Vietnam War as a member of the 12th Special Forces Reserves in Tulsa, OK. His service was recognized with numerous honors, including the Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Air Medal, Bronze Star Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and many more.

After his military service, Hurst dedicated himself to education and coaching. He spent over a decade teaching physical education and coaching at Prairie View A&M University, and later oversaw the academic program for athletes at the University of Houston for seven years. For more than 20 years, he also taught kinesiology and health education at Texas Southern University.

Hurst is survived by his loving wife, Mrs. Carol E. Hurst, and four children: Carolyn Hurst Hervey, Katrena Hurst Brantley, LaMonika Hurst Taylor, and Kenyatta Washington. He also leaves behind four grandchildren who will cherish his memory forever. According to a statement from Texas Southern University, a viewing and funeral will be held on Thursday, Feb. 1, at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston. The viewing will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m.

Dr. Jesse Hurst's legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched as an educator, coach, and veteran. His dedication to academic excellence and his service to our country will always be remembered and celebrated. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the entire Texas Southern University community during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
