Teenager fatally punches elderly man in the head with one punch.
This is the harrowing moment when Dennis Clarke, an 82-year-old veteran, was killed in a single punch to the head. On April 27, 2021, 16-year-old Omar Moumeche attacked Dennis at Derby bus station after Mr Clarke scolded him and his friends for misbehaving on an escalator.

The punch inflicted a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain on Mr Clarke, who died in hospital nine days later. Moumeche, now 18, was arrested within minutes and was found guilty of manslaughter in July. He was sentenced to two years in youth detention at Derby Crown Court on Friday.

Detective Inspector Mark Shaw said: “Our investigation was greatly helped by CCTV footage and witness accounts, which were presented during the trial. The defendant claimed he acted in self-defence, but the jury didn't accept his version of events.

Mr Clarke was a well-known and loved friend and family member. He confronted the teens who were misbehaving on the escalators, and they followed him to the bus station. He was then punched and died nine days later in hospital.

“Dennis’ family attended every hearing with absolute dignity, and I thank them for that. The events of that day have had a devastating effect on both the families of Mr Clarke and of the defendant himself. Mr Moumeche's actions will have a lasting impact, both while he is serving his sentence and afterwards when he tries to move forward.

“I hope this case will show how important it is to take a moment before resolving any matters and to avoid resorting to violence and its consequences. I would like to express my thanks to the family of Mr Clarke for their dignity throughout the entire criminal process and hope they can focus on their fond memories of Dennis.”

Moumeche has been sentenced to two years in jail. Andrew Baxter from the CPS said: “Dennis Clarke’s death was the result of the young person’s intimidating and aggressive behaviour, and his refusal to back down. Mr Clarke had gone about his business thinking the incident was over.

“Moumeche chose to confront him aggressively, even though he was an elderly man and posed no threat. He threw a punch that led to the death of an innocent man, leaving his family in grief.

“I offer everyone close to Dennis Clarke all my sympathy for their loss.”

Two other teenage boys who were arrested in connection with the attack were not charged.
