The family of Alegend Jones is calling for accountability after the 17-year-old tragically passed away due to alleged abuse. Jones was a sexual assault survivor receiving care at the Youth Villages in Bartlett, TN.
According to 25 News Now, Jones was allegedly instructed by two male counselors at the health department of the facility to remove her clothes. Her mother, Shona Garner, said she was not informed of the full details of the incident that happened on Nov. 16, leading her to seek civil rights attorney Ben Crump for help.
Crump spoke on behalf of the victim, saying: “She did not want to take off her clothes in front of two male counselors.” After being informed of the altercation, Garner called the police. When she saw her daughter’s state, she said “it’s time for my baby to go.”
The care facility released a statement denying the allegations and said Jones’ death was the result of a medical emergency. They said protocols were promptly put into action when it became evident Jones was experiencing a medical emergency and that Emergency Medical Service were contacted and “arrived onsite within minutes.” However, Garner insists the statements made by the center are untrue.
