Sydney police step up efforts to catch armed man targeting women, with increased patrols and release of CCTV footage.
Police in Sydney's north-west are on the hunt for an armed man who has been targeting women. They have released CCTV footage and increased patrols in the area to help catch him.
According to reports, four women have been approached by the man while walking alone. In each incident, he has threatened them for their belongings. Three of the women have reported that the man was armed with either a flick-knife or a hammer. These incidents all occurred within a span of 45 minutes, between 5:20am and 6:05am yesterday, in the suburbs of Northmead, Toongabbie, and North Parramatta.
Superintendent Barry Vincent has urged anyone with information to come forward, as the man is believed to be acting alone. He also mentioned that they are looking into any potential connection to a series of break-ins in the area over the weekend and yesterday. In an attempt to identify the suspect, police have released CCTV footage of a man dressed in dark clothing and a balaclava. Vincent has asked for the public's help in identifying the man in the footage, and has advised people not to approach him due to the serious nature of the crimes he is suspected of committing.
Vincent also reminded the community to stay vigilant and to take precautions, such as walking in well-lit areas, while the suspect is still at large. He stated that the man's motive is currently unknown, but it appears that he is targeting women opportunistically.
The crime spree began at 4am yesterday when reports came in of a man trespassing on several properties in Northmead. An hour later, a white Mitsubishi Outlander SUV was reported stolen from a petrol station in North Rocks. A 47-year-old woman was then allegedly robbed of her bag and personal items on Mons Road in Northmead. The suspect is believed to have fled the scene in the stolen vehicle. Shortly after, a 19-year-old woman was approached by the man and threatened with a flick-knife in Toongabbie. Five minutes later, a 49-year-old woman was also targeted by the man, this time with a hammer. He stole her backpack and then allegedly confronted a 27-year-old woman on North Rocks Road in North Parramatta.
Fortunately, the stolen items and the SUV have been recovered. However, the suspect is still at large and there have been no further sightings of him today. Superintendent Vincent has urged the public to remain cautious and to report any information to Crime Stoppers or the local police station. He also thanked the two men who tracked the stolen phone to help in the recovery of the stolen items. The investigation is ongoing and police are determined to catch the suspect before he can harm anyone else.
