Sydney issues health warning due to visitor carrying measles.
Last week, a traveler who arrived in Sydney was diagnosed with measles. This individual was infectious during their flights from Dubai to Sydney International Airport, as well as on a flight from Sydney Domestic T3 to Adelaide on Tuesday, June 11. In light of this, NSW Health is urging anyone who may have been on these flights or in the same terminals at the same time to be aware of any potential symptoms.

Specifically, the flights in question are Emirates flight EK416, which departed from Dubai on Monday, June 10 and arrived at Sydney International Terminal on Tuesday, June 11, and Qantas flight QF749, which departed from Sydney Domestic T3 on Tuesday, June 11 and landed in Adelaide later that evening. Additionally, anyone who was at Sydney International Terminal arrivals between 5pm and 7pm, or Sydney Domestic Terminal 3 departures between 6pm and 8:51pm on Tuesday, June 11, should also be vigilant.

Dr. Anthea Katelaris, Acting Director of the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Public Health Unit, assures that there is no ongoing risk at these locations, but it is still important to watch out for symptoms. These may include fever, runny nose, sore eyes, and a cough, followed by a red rash that spreads from the head and face to the rest of the body. Symptoms can appear up to 18 days after exposure, so anyone who may have been in these areas should remain attentive until June 29, 2024.

If anyone develops symptoms, they are advised to notify their GP or emergency department beforehand and mention that they may have been exposed to measles. This will help prevent the spread of the disease to others in the waiting room. Dr. Katelaris also reminds everyone to check their vaccination status, as measles is highly contagious. Those born after 1965 should ensure they have received two doses of the measles vaccine, especially before traveling abroad, as there are currently outbreaks in various parts of the world.
