A search is underway off the coast of a South Australian town for the body of a surfer who is believed to have been killed in a shark attack. Witnesses on a clifftop reported seeing the 55-year-old man attacked by a shark measuring approximately 4.5 metres in length.
Emergency services responded to reports of the attack off the coast of Granites Beach in Westall Way Loop near Streaky Bay this morning. Six surfers had been in the water at the time, however the victim had paddled out further than the rest of the group.
South Australia Police are leading the search operation, with assistance from Police Water Operations, PolAir, State Emergency Service and local volunteers. The search is expected to continue until the end of the day.
Streaky Bay is located on the Eyre Peninsula, approximately 700 kilometres from Adelaide. The beach is known as a popular spot for surfers, but is also known for having a large population of great white sharks.
Shark expert Andrew Fox has noted that whales are currently migrating, and fur seal pups are learning to swim by themselves, which could explain why sharks are present in the area. This is the third shark attack off the South Australian coast this year. Earlier this year, 64-year-old Pam Cook survived being bitten while swimming at Beachport. The body of Simon Bacanello, a teacher attacked while surfing in May, was never found. Another surfer, John Campion, survived an attack in 2012.
