In a recent development, the Supreme Court has informed the Enforcement Directorate that they will be open to hearing arguments on the interim bail plea of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. This comes in light of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Delhi, which may cause a delay in the hearing of Kejriwal's plea against his arrest in the excise policy-linked money laundering case.
During the hearing, the court, comprising of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, informed Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, who was representing the ED, that the hearing on Kejriwal's plea may take some time. Therefore, they are considering hearing the probe agency's arguments on interim bail for Kejriwal. However, Raju stated that he will be opposing any interim bail for the Chief Minister.
The bench clarified that they are only considering hearing the arguments on interim bail and not necessarily granting it. They further requested Raju to come prepared for the arguments on May 7. The bench is currently hearing Kejriwal's plea against his arrest by the ED, after he was taken into judicial custody on March 21. The top court had issued a notice to the ED on April 15 and asked for their response to Kejriwal's plea.
Earlier, on April 9, the Delhi High Court had upheld Kejriwal's arrest, stating that there was no illegality and the ED had no other option after he repeatedly ignored summonses and refused to cooperate with the investigation. The case revolves around alleged corruption and money laundering in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi government's now-scrapped excise policy for 2021-22.
