Supreme Court ends contempt proceedings against Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved in misleading ads case.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court announced that it has decided to drop the contempt charges against yoga guru Ramdev, his aide Balkrishna, and their company Patanjali Ayurved Limited. This comes after the three individuals issued a formal apology for their involvement in a case involving misleading advertisements.

According to advocate Gautam Talukdar, who represented Ramdev, Balkrishna, and the company, the court has taken into account the undertakings made by the defendants and has closed the contempt proceedings. This decision was made by a bench comprising of Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah, who had been hearing the case since May 14.

The case was brought to the apex court by the Indian Medical Association, which alleged that there was a smear campaign against the Covid vaccination drive and modern medicine by Patanjali Ayurved. On February 27, the top court had issued notices to the company and its managing director Balkrishna, questioning why they should not be held in contempt for violating their previous undertakings regarding the advertising and efficacy of their products.

The court had further stated that the advertisements released by Patanjali, which went against their earlier assurance given to the court in November 2023, reflected an endorsement by Ramdev himself. In that order, the top court had specifically noted that the company had promised to not violate any laws and to refrain from making any claims about the medicinal properties of their products or against any system of medicine in the media.

However, when the company failed to adhere to these promises and made statements to the media that went against their assurance, the Supreme Court took notice and issued a show cause notice to Ramdev and the company. This was done to give them a chance to explain why they should not be held in contempt for not fulfilling their earlier assurances.
